Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cosimo Tangorra, Jr. to retire in March 2025

June 18, 2024

At the June 18 board meeting, the New Hartford Central School District Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Cosimo Tangorra, Jr. announced that he will retire next year. His last day with the district will be March 4, 2025.

“My time in New Hartford has been personally and professionally gratifying, and provided me the occasion to grow as a leader,” Dr. Tangorra said. “I was given the opportunity to work with a dedicated faculty and staff, and a wonderful student body. I feel privileged to have rounded out my career here.”

Dr. Tangorra’s career in education has spanned more than 30 years, serving as a teacher, principal, and administrator. Preceding his tenure in New Hartford, he served as the superintendent of schools for the Oppenheim-Ephratah, Trumansburg, Ilion, Central Valley and Niskayuna Central school districts, culminating in more than 20 years of experience in that role. He was also the Deputy Commissioner for the Office of P-12 Education for the New York State Education Department.

“Dr. Tangorra has provided the district with excellent leadership during some challenging years,” said New Hartford Board of Education President Pam King. “His unique perspective, vast experience, and can-do attitude has challenged New Hartford to move from a good district to an even better one. Dr. Tangorra will leave our district in a great position for our students when he retires next March.”

The district will conduct a search for a new Superintendent of Schools and expects to fill the position before February 2025. Dr. Tangorra and the new superintendent will work together for approximately four weeks to ensure a smooth change in leadership.
