ACT & SAT Information

Online registration is required. You will know immediately if your preferred test center has space for you to test, and you also can print your admission ticket from the website.  You will receive your results usually 2 to 3 weeks after taking the Exam.

You are required to upload a photo when registering for the ACT’s and SAT’s.  Make sure you have a full FACE photo with only YOU in the picture.  If your photo has you looking away, not able to see your entire face, another person in the picture with you, you WILL NOT be admitted to the test!

Applying Using the Common Application

The Common Application provides an online admission application that students may submit to any of 900+ 4-year colleges/universities. Once completed online, copies of the application can be sent electronically to any number of participating colleges. This potentially allows students to save time when applying to multiple colleges.

The Common App also has a smooth interface with the Naviance Family Connection software that the New Hartford Senior High Counseling Department uses to process students’ requests for transcripts and recommendations.

College Search Process

We realize how daunting the college search and application process can be. You can find many sources of information regarding this process in bookstores, on the Internet, from independent counselors and from people who have recently completed this process themselves. We compiled the information on these pages based upon our experiences with students in New Hartford, something you cannot find elsewhere.

Career Planning

Career exploration at the Senior High School builds upon the activities at the Junior High School and is designed to expose students to a variety of means of searching for possible career interests. This multi-faceted approach relies on the web-based Naviance activities, exposure through classroom career exploration opportunities, and SABA shadowing/internship opportunities.  Students will complete the following activities in Naviance:

  • Grade 10: Career Interest Profiler, Cluster Finder, and research career clusters or specific careers of interest
  • Grade 11: AchieveWorks® Personality inventory, AchieveWorks® MI Advantage inventory, and research specific careers of interest
  • Grade 12: Review careers of interest to determine post-secondary plans

Through our partnership with the School and Business Alliance (SABA) program students have the opportunity to participate in a 1-day job shadowing experience (there are multiple opportunities throughout the school year) and/or week-long unpaid internships during February break, April break, and/or summer vacation. The one-day shadowing experience is a great opportunity for students to get a glimpse into a particular job and/or business. The week-long internships give students an opportunity to get a more in-depth idea of a particular career. Students interested in the week-long internship experience are responsible for their own transportation to and from the work site. 

The goal is to provide students with both information about career possibilities and opportunities to participate in career exploration activities. Career exploration goes hand in hand with post-secondary planning. The ultimate goal of any post-secondary program is to enable one to translate knowledge into productive activity usually resulting in earning ability. We strongly encourage all students, regardless of the kind of post-secondary program they are exploring, to take advantage of career exploration activities.

SABA (School and Business Alliance) 

Through our partnership with the School and Business Alliance (SABA) program students have the opportunity to participate in a 1-day job shadowing experience (opportunities are offered throughout the school year) and/or week-long unpaid internships during February break, April break and/or summer vacation. 

The one-day shadowing experience is a great opportunity for students to get a glimpse into a particular job and/or business.  Students will sign-up through a Google Form that they are emailed.  Students will list careers they are interested in shadowing and the BOCES SABA coordinator will work to find a placement.

Roadmap Links to Success

The OHM BOCES School to Work program has created the Success Links to Success. This is an online source to give you information about careers/career areas. You will find a description of each field/area, paths to employment (training and/or educational requirements along with local college pathways to the field), and local employers who are hiring. It also contains links to Union websites, NYS Job postings, Civil Service information, and lots of other useful links. The Roadmap Links to Success website is updated on a regular basis, so the information posted is the most up-to-date.

Working Solutions

Working Solutions  is part of the local Workforce Development. Job seekers can find local job openings along with national job postings. They also provide free services such as: job search assistance; resume help; interviewing tips; timely information; recruitment info; online and other training opportunities; grant participation info; and more.

Exploring Careers Through Coursework

There are various courses available at the Senior High School and through BOCES that give students the opportunity to explore career interests.  Students are strongly encouraged to consider these options in addition to the standard college preparatory classes required for college admission.  As college admissions becomes more competitive, many college admissions officers find value in high school classes that help students become more knowledgeable of their selected career, hopefully translating to a commitment to the necessary post-secondary career preparation.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

Project Lead The Way courses are available to all students at the Senior High School. There are seven PLTW courses designed to expose students through hands-on activities to the kinds of skills needed to be successful in the engineering field.

New Visions

Students in grade 12 may participate in the BOCES New Visions program that exposes seniors to career areas such as medicine, law, engineering, business, communications and education.
