This fall, a group of New Hartford Central School District students will begin their high school careers enrolled in a program that couples high school and college level instruction with career-focused and project-based learning.
Six Perry Junior High School students were inducted into Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES’s Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH OHM) during a ceremony in July at OHM BOCES’s Howard D. Mettelman Learning Center.
The program integrates career readiness with a curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. P-TECH OHM is open to students entering grade 9 and enrollees can elect to participate in a four, five or six-year program at no cost. Upon successful completion, graduates earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree from Mohawk Valley Community College.
There are one dozen degree programs offered through P-TECH OHM, including business administration, computer science and electrical engineering technology.
P-TECH OHM partners with more than 40 regional businesses to provide students with hands-on learning experiences, such as job shadowing and internship opportunities. Business partners also serve as mentors and assist with placing graduates of the program in positions within their companies.
“These students will embark on an educational journey that will lead to a bright future of college, career and citizenship readiness,” said P-TECH OHM Principal Christina Warner.
