“Today’s school counselors are vital members of the education team. They help all students in the areas of academic achievement; career and social/emotional development, ensuring today’s students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.”
– American School Counseling Association
Our dedicated school counselors offer a comprehensive range of support to guide students through their academic and personal journeys. They conduct annual reviews to assess individual needs, then provide tailored guidance in three key areas:
- Career Exploration
- Academic Support
- Social/Emotional Counseling
From sparking curiosity about future paths in elementary school to navigating college applications in high school, our counselors offer expert advice and resources. Our counselors monitor academic progress, connect students with support services when needed, and facilitate communication between students, teachers, and parents.
Beyond academics, we provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and preventive education to help our students navigate social and emotional challenges that may impact their learning. As a result, our school counselors play a vital role in fostering a supportive and empowering environment where every student can thrive.

Banana Splits
Banana Splits is a program for first through sixth grade students, whose families are coping with the stress of significant change, such as separation (for any reason including employment, deployment, incarceration, divorce, adoption, or an illness or death of a loved one.)
The program is a peer support group in which the students realize that they are not alone in their feelings or concerns. This is accomplished through activities and appropriate discussions.
Please note that these groups are intended for students who need some additional support due to a significant stressor in their home that continues to be of a concern. However, Banana Splits is not a replacement for counseling services.
Groups take place once a month, during the students lunch and recess. Students can decide themselves if they wish to attended the meetings once they have joined. However a signed permission slip is required to enroll in the program. You can download the permission slip below and send it in with you child.
Counseling Plan
New Hartford Central School’s counseling program is designed to meet the needs of students’ academic, social/emotional, and career growth. School counselors are professionals who serve as student advocates and collaborate with families, school social workers, teachers, other educators, and outside resources. Working in conjunction with these interested parties, school counselors facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and skill sets necessary for students to become productive and contributing members of society.
